Phoenix Hiking & Activities
Phoenix and Central Arizona have so many outdoor activities; you could devote your entire trip to exploring its wonders. Raging rivers, pristine lakes, babbling brooks, gently sweeping valleys, rich rolling mountains, brilliant red plateaus and the beauty of the open desert are just a few of Arizona's delights. Just for giggles, let's say you're here for 5 days. Ponder this itinerary.
Day One - Land Activities
Start with a half day hike through Piestewa Peak, Camelback Mountain, or the majestic McDowell Mountains; a true Western experience with cowboys and ranches situated along the way. Be certain to bring some tasty trail mix to tame that ravenous belly, or you can stop at an authentic Western restaurant. After a bite to eat, hop in the car and head to the Desert Botanical Garden, where you'll see an incredible display of the desert's delights.
Day Two - Water Sports
Enjoy an outing by the water on Canyon Lake, Lake Pleasant or Saguaro Lake. Feel the sun beam vibrantly upon you, or stay active and get some exercise. Swim a quiet swim. Water ski, Jet ski or wake board through the glistening waters. If you're feeling real adventurous, try rock climbing on the cliffs. On the other hand, you could leisurely stroll around and explore the flora and peacefulness of your surroundings.
Day Three - Aerial Ventures
Awake early and jump in a hot-air balloon. Float adrift a land that time left untarnished and pure. See the beauty of the desert landscape. Your knowledgeable tour guide will tell you all about the plant life, historical lands and magnificent mountains below. Afterwards, check out the Phoenix Zoo. (Voted among America's zoos in the top five for kids.) An extraordinary experience for adults as well, this is a great place to spend the rest of the day.
Day Four - Golf and Nature's Wonders
Get ready for some bird peeping at Salt River. Eagles, hawks, owls and falcons are abounding in the Arizona skies. Keep your eyes peeled for the vermilion flycatcher. This majestic bird covered with red feathers is usually perching quietly on the tree branches. Also spectacular is the great blue heron. How about a round of golf along the way? The Ocotillo Golf Course is a great place to play while you watch the birds. Then again, maybe you're here for the gold. If so, try the Robson's Mining World and pan for those golden nuggets.
Day Five - The Wild West
Ever wondered what it was like during the Wild West? Horseback through the Estrella Mountains and unify with nature. Explore the MacDonald ranch and join a cattle drive. Mosey on down to Rawhide; a vintage town that brings you back to the 1880's with stagecoach rides and pistols at dawn. If you still have the energy, the Arizona Science Center in the greater Phoenix area, is always a fine choice.
